Train + Metropolitan Cathedral San Salvador of Oviedo: | 0,00 € |
The origin of the Cathedral of Oviedo is in the transfer of the court of the Kingdom of Asturias from Pravia to Oviedo during the reign of Alfonso II. This king ordered the construction of a palace and two basilicas dedicated to the Holy Saviour and the twelve Apostles and St. María. The Holy Chest, brought from Jerusalem containing multiple relics, was installed in the king's thesaurum: the Holy Chamber, where the crosses of the Asturian monarchy were also placed.
The Cathedral is also called Sancta Ovetensis; owing to quantity and quality of relics contained in the Holy Chamber, highlighting among all the relics the Holy Shroud of Jesus.
Tradition considers that Alfonso II was the first pilgrim to Compostela and that is why the Cathedral of Oviedo is the origin of the Camino de Santiago, from here the Camino Primitivo starts.
The current Gothic Cathedral was built throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, on the foundations of the pre-Romanesque basilica, the facade was raised throughout the sixteenth century.
The main Oviedo temple is in the center of the old town, surrounded by baroque palaces and adjacent to the Archaeological and Fine Arts Museums of Asturias, as well as the Monastery of San Pelayo.
