Hotel + Cuenca’s Cathedral: | 0,00 € |
Although it seems that the origins of the city are Roman, it was the Muslims who built a fortress named Conca.
When the construction of the Cathedral began, Romanesque still was the dominant style in Christian kingdoms, so it is no wonder that the foreigners of Alfonso VIII’s court introduced Gothic elements in our Cathedral, since it was the prevailing style in Europe beyond the Pyrenees.
The Cathedral was consecrated by Saint Julián, second bishop of Cuenca, in the year 1196, during its early stages.
In the 20th century, the façade was damaged in 1902 due to the collapse of the bell tower after a lightning strike. A reconstruction process started in 1910, turning it into a neogothic façade by Vicente Lampérez. The current appearance undoubtedly shows that it was left unfinished.
In the highest part there is a statue of Saint Julián, which is interestingly the only statue on the entire façade.
A dance of lights and shadows accompanies us throughout the visit, creating incomparable spaces and sensations at every moment of the day and night
