After touring three continents and being seen by more than 200,000 spectators, La Fura dels Baus' Carmina Burana returns, a show that unites the powerful music of Carl Orff with the universe of La Fura. A show with live music and impressive scenes. On stage, a cylinder eight metres in diameter literally envelops the musicians, while the images projected on it illustrate the work from beginning to end: a giant moon, the thaw, a floral ecstasy, a live grape harvest, taverns, singers hanging from cranes and submerged in wine, water and fire... this is Carmina Burana.
The original Carmina Burana is a collection of poems from the 12th and 13th centuries, preserved in a single codex found in 1803 by Johann Christoph von Aretin in Benediktbeuern Abbey in Bavaria; it is now kept in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
The codex contains a total of 300 poems, mostly written in Latin, German and French. These poems extol the pleasure of living and the interest in earthly pleasures, carnal love and the enjoyment of nature, always with a critical and satirical view of the social and ecclesiastical classes of the time.
Carl Orff composed his Carmina Burana between 1935 and 1936, based on 24 poems from the original codex. The original title of the work, Carmina Burana, (secular songs for singers and choirs to be sung with instruments and magical images), is the starting point for the show that La Fura dels Baus has created.
